Inner Speech
Book Design
This accordion book is based on Shayla Love’s piece What Film and Literature Reveal About the Voice in the Head, which examines how stories teach us about inner speech. Reflecting that idea, the book is designed to feel like a journey deeper into the mind. Each page gradually darkens and becomes more crowded with jumbled letters before opening back up again, echoing the arc of a narrative that builds to a climax and then releases.
Some scanned words are partially hidden beneath other pages to mimic thoughts that are present but not fully formed. References to film and literature appear throughout, from the book’s cinematic aspect ratio to the cover and back cover that resemble credit scenes. Because the entire book is an accordion, it can be stretched out to reveal the full progression of color, density, and thought.
